Welcome to my travel tips section where I share some tips that I have found useful while travelling.  If you have any tips you would like me to share on this site, please email them to me.  - Mahalo

General Travel Tips for Asia
  • Many shops in Hong Kong do not provide plastic bags for free.  Its a good idea to have a reusable bag that you can fold up when shopping.
  • In case you do not have the right power adapter, most hotels in Hong Kong will have power bar/adapters that you can use in your room upon request. Give housekeeping a call to request one.
Japan Specific Travel Tips
  • Japan is still primarily a cash based society, many shops may not accept credit cards as payment.
  • It is generally not polite to eat, drink, and smoke while walking the streets of Japan.  There are a number of designated areas where you can eat, drink, and smoke which are generally outside of convenience stores and supermarkets.  Please use them and don't be that kind of tourist
  • You are not required to leave a tip when dining in a restaurant. Actually, I haven't encountered a restaurant that accepted the tip that I've left
  • Get an ICOCA, SUICA, PASSMO, etc card for transportation.  They work just like the Octopus card in Hong Kong and all you need to do is tap in and tap out.  It makes life so much easier than trying to figure out how much it'll cost to travel from point A to B

Cambodia Specific Travel Tips
  • If you need a visa to enter Cambodia (see here if you do) I would suggest getting it online instead of at entry but be weary and make sure you are getting it on the Official Government website.
  • Cambodia has 2 seasons, “Dry and Wet”.  Dry season is typically from December to April with the hottest during February to April.  Wet season starts in May and lasts through to November.
  • Almost all shops and restaurants accept US Dollars as payment.  Bring lots of small bills with you that are not too worn and are the newer format.
  • Avoid wearing light coloured or open toed footwear when exploring the temples and ruins.  The dirt is a reddish colour that tends to stain everything to that colour and you will be walking on uneven terrain.
  • There is a dress code / code of conduct when you visit the temples and ruins.  Find it here
  • A lot of restaurants and cafes have free wifi available.
